I could read and write English well enough but I froze whenever I had to speak. The speaking practice was the part that changed things — by the time I sat the test it was not the part I was worried about.

I was working during the day so the evening batch was the only way I could do this. Two evenings a week for three months, and I got the score I needed for my application.

The timed practice papers were the useful part. I knew the maths, but I kept running out of time until I had done enough full-length papers to get the pacing right.

I had used a phone my whole life and never really a computer. Three months later I can put together a spreadsheet and a proper document, which is what the job asked for.
