PTE Academic is Pearson’s computer-based English test, accepted for study and migration in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada. The whole test is taken at a computer and scored automatically, which is why results usually arrive within a few days rather than a fortnight. Because it is machine-scored, PTE rewards different habits from IELTS. Speaking is recorded into a microphone rather than delivered to an examiner, and several tasks are scored across more than one skill at once — a spoken answer can carry marks for both speaking and listening. The course covers the task types, the timing, and the specific business of speaking clearly and continuously into a microphone, which is the part most candidates find unfamiliar.
